Stem Cell banking

Introduction

Stem cell banking is a process within which a certain category of precious cells is banked for future use. These cells are extracted from the human body and put through certain processes for preservation. Stem cell banking is done to do stem cell treatments. Stem cell banks use advanced technology to store these cells that protect these cells from contamination. There is a set standard as to what processes are applied to these cells to maintain their quality and effectiveness. Stem cells are obtained from the baby's umbilical cord blood at the time of delivery. These cells can be used for future stem cell treatment of the baby as well as the family in the future.

What are stem cells?

The stem cells collected during the stem cell banking procedure have enormous healing capacity. These cells can help fight several life-threatening diseases. One of the unique facets of these cells is that they can transform into any kind of cell that is needed by the body during the healing procedure. These cells can turn into bone cells, lung cells, liver cells, etc.

With time, our body starts becoming weak and we become prone to several diseases. These diseases may range from bone problems to cancer etc. Most of these diseases can damage the affected part of the body. These stem cells can replace the damaged cells and start the recovery process.

How are the cells collected?

The stem cell banking procedure is a highly complex biological procedure. The amniotic stem cells are collected through a process called genetic amniocentesis. Stem cell banking is a pre-natal diagnosis procedure. This procedure is usually carried out during the second trimester of the pregnancy. For the procedure, a very small quantity of fluid is withdrawn during the genetic analysis. This fluid is stored in a specialized collection container.

Stem cell banking requires the involvement of several experts who are highly trained to perform their roles. This procedure is conducted with the utmost safety and it is done by taking hundred percent care of the mother’s needs. There is no additional risk in conducting the stem cell banking procedure. Rather, it is one of the procedures that can save the life of your baby as well as the family in the future.

Cryopreservation

After the initial process of collection, the sample is taken to a dedicated specialized lab for further processing. This process is done for the preservation of the sample. These labs expose the sample to a gradual freezing process, which increases the reservative capacity of the cells. This helps in conducting the cryopreservation process properly. These cells are then transferred to a liquid nitrogen storage tank.

What are these cells used for?

Stem cell banking is done with the purpose of several things. Science hasn’t even explored the full potential of these stem cells. Yet, it is proved that these cells can heal and provide recovery in 80+ diseases through replacement and repair procedures.  Some of them are -

  1. Nerve cells repair - These cells have proved to be of great benefit to people suffering from diseases like Parkinson, and Alzheimer’s that cause severe nerve damage.  These cells replace the damaged nerve part to provide enhanced functioning of the nerve.
  2. Cardiovascular cell repair - Stem cells can heal the damaged cells of cardiovascular systems. The damage that may have been caused by heart problems or diseases. Heart cells are replaced by stem cells then the repair procedure is started.
  3. Blood disease repair - Stem cells can transform into blood cells to cause repairment to severe blood-related problems.
  4. Disease repairment - Stem banking is mainly done to treat various medical conditions. These include problems like cancer, Lymphoma, Leukemia, Multiple Myeloma, Neuroblastoma, or other autoimmune diseases.

Stem cell banking cost

The cost of stem cell banking can range anything from ₹50,000 - ₹1,00,000/-. The stem cell bank cost depends on multiple factors -

  • City - The city and hospital you choose for the process play a crucial role in deciding the cost of the process.
  • These costs may also differ because of the type of stem cell storage bank that you are selecting. The types of equipment and specialized capacity play a pivotal role here.
  • The extraction method or the storage procedure is also pivotal in deciding the stem cell banking cost.
  • There are several specialists in the market for stem cell preservation. The experience of these experts may vary and thus the cost of hiring them.

Conclusion -

The technology that we possess today is not adequate to discover the wonders stem cell banking can lead to. But, one certain thing is that it has got huge potential and can change the health industry forever. This is why it is always in your favour to get this procedure done, for the safety of your family.
