Every couple that wants to have a baby goes through the same process, but for a few, the time taken to reach parenthood is long-stretched. The reason can be many, starting from medical to social. But this test will help you to understand where you stand today and what steps should be taken to have a safe parenthood without much hustle. Fertility evaluation can be done at any fertility centre near your house. You can also contact your house physician for further details.

How can it be evaluated?

For women, ovulation time matters a lot, and doctors check that in the first place. Ovulation home kits are available online, and you can run the test for yourself as well. For expert comments, you need to contact a specialist. You can get help from different apps to understand your period logs and determine your monthly ovulation day over some time. Your doctor may need those dates. Ultrasound exams of ovaries and blood tests for hormone conditions are some of the basic tests that most doctors would recommend. Generally, women with irregular periods or disrupted period cycles can have ovulation disorder. But healthy women with regular periods can also have ovulation disorder if they have hormonal issues!

Some tests for women:

  • Ultrasound: This is the very basic and most important test done on women. The result will show the shape, position, and condition of the uterus. The result will also show whether there’s any fibroid or cyst inside the fallopian tube. The number of follicles in the ovaries, and the ovulation capacity of the woman are also some of the outcomes of the result.
  • Hysterosalpingogram: This is a different type of x-ray to check the fallopian tubes and the uterus. During this test, the doctor places a radiographic dye inside the uterine cavity. Now the x-rays pass through that place. The dye will slip through the fallopian tubes if they are open and go straight to the abdominal cavity. If the tubes are not open, they will stay there in the fallopian tube or somewhere inside the uterus. The dye will stay where the blockage is placed.
  • Hysterosonography: This is a very complex type of ultrasound where salt water is injected inside the uterus of the woman during this test. This test clearly shows the shape of the uterine cavity, which may get distorted due to the presence of fibroid tumours. Some experts also insert air bubbles inside the uterus and fallopian tubes that clearly show the shape and condition of the uterus and fallopian tubes of the woman.
  • Hysterolaparoscopy: This test is run to check the pelvic portion of the woman and whether she has any pelvic cysts, endometriosis, ovarian cysts, uterine anomalies, fibroids, or any other abnormalities that can push the pregnancy further.

For men, the evaluation test is simply another name for semen analysis. This analysis will show the sperm count, sperm movement rate, and sperm structure. Disruption in all these or some of these can lead to a late or no pregnancy. When you test the woman, you must also run the test for the men. For some men, their semen doesn’t include any sperm or the sperm count is low. With that sperm strength or sperm health, one cannot make a woman pregnant no matter how fertile she is! With misshapen sperm, the problem still exists. For some men, the sperm don’t move properly and with proper speed. The sperm must meet the egg inside the fallopian tube within a given time. If not, they need to wait for another month when the woman will release another egg.

Some tests for men:

Semen Analysis: This is done to evaluate sperm motility, shape, and count. Also, further tests are available, where DNA fragmentation index and reactive oxygen species assay are also checked. The result of these advanced tests can show the result of infertility of the man.

Scrotal ultrasound: This ultrasound is done on the scrotum of men. If any type of abnormalities exists, that will be visible in the result.

Transrectal ultrasound: This test examines vas deferens, seminal vesicles, etc.
