Missing a period cannot always means that a woman is pregnant. There can be several other reasons for missing you period. They could be hormonal imbalances, obesity or any other very common health issue. At the very beginning of puberty, menstrual cycle can be irregular and again when the time of menopause comes closer, periods can be quite irregular. A normal cycle is of 28 days and the cycle ranging from 21 to 35 days is considered to be perfectly fine. Any interval longer than that can be because of the following reasons:

Stress:

Stress can harm the body in different ways. It can affect the hormones and also lead to sudden gain or loss of weight. It can lead to severe health issues. It also affects the part of the brain that is responsible for regulating periods and hence the delay. Regular exercise and meditation can give relief and help in this situation.

Obesity:

This can be another major reason for missing your period. In this case you may be advised to take a balanced healthy diet and some exercises to lose weight.

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS):

This is generally a hormonal disorder. Here more of male hormone androgen is produced. Cysts are formed on the ovaries as a result of which ovulation can be reduced or stopped. As a treatment of PCOS contraceptive medicines can be advised by the doctor to regulate the menstrual cycle.

Birth Control:

If one has adopted birth control techniques then missed periods can be a common problem. It may take around six months for the cycle to come back in track after the medication is stopped. This is caused because of the estrogen and progestin that prevent the release of eggs from the ovaries.

Thyroids:

This is another medical condition that highly affects bodily functions such as metabolism and hormone levels. The overactive or underactive thyroid glands can be the cause of you missed period. This can be easily treated with medication and the cycle again becomes normal once the prescribed medication is adopted.
However, it is advised to see a doctor for diagnosis. Only a doctor can help you detect the correct reason behind your missed or late periods. The changes in your cycle should be recorded and supervised and any major imbalance or delay should be consulted with the doctor.
