Heartburn and Indigestion During Pregnancy

Heartburn and Indigestion During Pregnancy

Heartburn and indigestion are usually used as interchangeable but there is a difference that you should be aware of. Indigestion is a wider term, of which heartburn is one of the mere symptoms that people suffer from. Heartburn refers to stomach acid escaping into the oesophagus.

Causes of Heartburn

Some of the basic reasons behind indigestion are hormonal changes that relax the muscles and ligaments to prepare your body for birth. It is not just focusing on the vaginal muscles but also the area around the stomach. These muscles usually keep the acid from going into the mouth. When relaxed, it is easier for the acid to escape to your throat causing a burning sensation. The baby’s movement toward the end of the pregnancy further triggers heartburn.

Managing indigestion and heartburn in pregnancy

The painful heartburns are usually unavoidable as it comes as part and parcel of the pregnancy. However, there are ways that you can reduce the intensity of these issues

  • Avoid fried spicy and high-fat food. Also refrain from alcohol, citrus fruits and caffeine.
  • Keep hydrated and keep ingesting fluids
  • Eat small meals, but eat regularly every two hours.
  • Don’t lie down immediately after a meal as it can cause indigestion

Pregnant women are also advised to chew their food thoroughly and swallow it slowly to avoid throwing up or choking on their meals. Eating fast can even cause air to get trapped in your oesophagus leading to heartburn.

Tums and Rolaids are safe for use during pregnancy and can help treat heartburn. However, other medications that have sodium or sodium bicarbonate are not safe for pregnant moms. Consult your doctor before taking an antacid.
