Signs of Labor: Early Symptoms

Signs of Labor: Early Symptoms

What are the signs of labor? What are labor symptoms?

The most common sign of labor is repeated, strong contractions that last for more than 1 minute and don’t stop even when you start to move.

Contractions

It is the most tell-tale sign of pregnancy. Labor contractions can last more than 30 seconds and occur at regular intervals of 4 to 5 minutes. If the contractions are increasing or changing to a patterned set, it might mean that labor is starting.

Back pain

Back pain is normal throughout the pregnancy. However, this pain can get more pronounced and start to pulse with the contractions. If you are noticing any change in the pack pain during the pregnancy, you should discuss it with your doctor.

Feeling fullness/pressure

When the baby is ready to be born, you will get a very clear feeling of pressure. Often, the woman might feel the need to take a bowel movement.

Lightening: drop of the pregnant tummy

During the last days of the pregnancy, the tummy drops. This drop will relieve the pressure on the lungs and the stomach. This allows the mother-to-be to breathe easily and eat more.

Loss of cervical mucus plug

The cervical mucus plus that is blocking the end of the cervix will usually fall out before labor. However, losing the plug doesn’t mean that you are going into labor right away. Sometimes, the labor can be a few days ahead. This plus looks similar to the fluid that is discharged during ovulation, only thicker. In some cases, it will be lost on a trip to the bathroom or appear in the underwear.

Leaking of fluid or water breaking

When the labor is about to get started, the amniotic sac will leak or break. If you see any fluid leaking from your vagina, head to a hospital immediately. After the sac has broken, the only option is birth. If you see a brown or green colour in the fluid, it means that the baby has taken a bowel movement in the uterus.

Cramping or bloody discharge

The first labor pain might feel like regular menstrual cramps. If there is a bloody discharge, it might be associated with the loss of cervical plug.

Increase in blood pressure

When the body kicks into labor, the blood pressure will rise a bit.

Weight loss

Women who are about to give birth to a baby, lose about one to three pounds of pure water weight.

Nausea/vomiting

Just before the labor begins, the woman starts to feel that something is about to happen. It is during this time when the body might decide to empty the stomach contents which can look as vomiting or diarrhoea.

Crowning

Women who are giving birth for the first time have more hectic labor than women who have given birth before. If you wait too long, the baby can start crowning on the way to the hospital which is followed by dilation and breaking of the water bag.

Sudden burst of energy

The woman can feel like she is filled with energy. This increase in energy level is associated with the nesting instinct.

Can I tell when I will go into labor?

It is very difficult to predict when labor will exactly start. As you get closer to the due date, you will see some signs and symptoms that will help you in recognizing the start of the labor.

When you are in the last trimester of pregnancy, the body of the mother and the baby will go through changes at a lightning pace. Baby will be growing larger and gaining weight every day. The body of the mother will be preparing for labor.

How do I know if I am in labor?

All women have different labor symptoms. Recognizing whether you are going into labor or not is a difficult task. Even if you have some signs, it is not a definite proof of you being in active labor. It still might be weeks away.

Can I tell the difference between true labor and false labor?

True labor and false labor can overlap because they are associated with contractions that can be less or more strong. Braxton Hicks contractions are not felt by every woman. Having these contractions after the 37th week of pregnancy is normal. However, if you are having these contractions before the 37th week, you should call your doctor immediately as they might be a sign of premature labor. It is important to remember that any strong or regular pain or contraction before 37 weeks of pregnancy is not normal. Any labor before this is preterm or premature labor.

If you experience any of this, you should go directly to a hospital. Do not try to check if this is true or false labor by yourself.

After 37 weeks, contractions that come closer together are signs of true labor. They are strong, painful and lead to cervical opening.

What is the 5-1-1 rule?

The 5-1-1 rules means the following:

  • 5 = Every 5 minutes there is a contraction
  • 1 = Lasting a full minute or more
  • 1 = Lasting for at least 1 hour

However, this is not a fixed rule. It can be different for a woman who is pregnant for the first time and for a woman who has had a baby before. For women who are having their first baby, this can be 4-1-1 or even 3-1-1.

It is important to remember that even though it might appear that the labor is not starting, after months of training, your body will be ready for labor.
