Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS)

After the baby is born, mothers have to run everywhere for taking care of their babies. In the case of some expectant mothers, legs start to get ready for this marathon before their baby is born. Restless Leg Syndrome is a condition where it feels like there is electricity coursing through your legs when you are most tired. It can be uncomfortable but is relatively harmless.

Causes of Restless Leg Syndrome

There is no definitive, known cause for RLS. Some researchers believe that is a combination of food sensitivity and iron deficiency.

Important Facts About Restless Leg Syndrome

There is no specific time at which RLS can occur. Women have faced this condition during all three trimesters of pregnancy. However, the condition is most painful in the last months of the pregnancy when the legs are tired and swollen from carrying the extra weight of the baby. Medications for RLS are not safe to be used during pregnancy. So, you might have to accept this pain until the baby is born.

Treatments for Restless Leg Syndrome

As food sensitivity is believed to be one of the causes for RLS, you should try to keep a food journal to figure out the food culprits. Rest often, prop up legs and get acupuncture for removing some of the pain. You can also consult your doctor regarding iron deficiency. Simple blood tests can be used for checking this. You can try taking a diet rich in iron and iron supplementation for reversing the condition of RLS.
