Perineal Soreness

Perineal soreness postpartum pain

Now that the pain of the pregnancy is over, you are ready to regain composure and focus on your baby. However, this is not going to be easy. Some new mothers go through perineal soreness, pain around the rectum and vagina after delivering the baby. Perineal soreness is very common, especially if you gave birth vaginally or had a vaginal tear or an episiotomy (an incision between the vagina and anus for helping with birth) during birth.

What causes perineal soreness?

Perineal soreness is the result of you passing a baby through the birth canal and out of the vagina, a very small opening.

Important facts about perineal pain

If you are going through perineal pain after giving birth where there was no episiotomy or vaginal tear, you can try flushing warm water and applying warm compresses over the area. If you had an episiotomy or a vaginal tear, you will have stitches in the perineal area. You need to clean it thoroughly following the directions of the doctor to prevent any infection.

Treatment for perineal pain?

If you didn't have any stitches or open sores, the pain will be gone within a few days. You can try using a squirt bottle of antiseptic for rinsing the area after every bathroom break. In case of tears and stitches, it will take some time for perineal pain to subside. This requires additional use of gentle cleansing and antiseptics. It is very important to not touch the area for gauging pain. It will only irritate and increase healing time. You can try topical anesthetics and heating pads for helping in easing the pain.
