What is linea nigra and what causes it?

During pregnancy, a dark line can appear starting from the belly button and ending at the pubic bone. This line is known as Linea Nigra. The cause of this skin change during pregnancy is hormones. Increased levels of the melanocyte-stimulating hormone can result in darker freckles, areolas, and nipples. It is not painful and posess zero threat to your and your baby’s health.

Linea Nigra is a pregnancy-induced skin change. It is caused by the melanocyte-stimulating hormone that darkens certain areas when in contact with the sun. Therefore, if you like to sit out in the sun, the line on your tummy can get darker and more noticeable. The line is darker on darker skin but more noticeable on the lighter skin.

This is a very rare condition and appears only when you are several months pregnant. However, you can’t tell someone pregnant only from the Linea Nigra.

Here are some treatment options for Linea Nigra:

?    Use Sunscreen while going outside.

?   According to some researchers, folic acid deficiency is responsible for this line. So, you need to eat foods that are dark and rich in folic acid.

?   Eat more spinach and other green, leafy vegetables.

However, even after doing the above-mentioned options, Linea Nigra can still appear.

Does linea nigra mean it's a girl or boy?

There are several myths surrounding how to tell the gender of the baby without any medical tests. According to some people, the length of the Linea Nigra can tell us that:

?    If the line is going up from below and ends at the belly button, it’s a girl.

?   If the line ends all the way up at the rib cage, it’s a boy.
