What causes haemorrhoids?

Constipation during pregnancy is a common issue that can cause excessive pushing and pressure on varicose veins of the rectum. An increase in blood quantity can trigger haemorrhoids in the body. also with the hormonal changes cause indigestion, and leaves the food around for a longer duration. The more time the food spends in the intestine, the more water is collected causing constipation.

How can you alleviate haemorrhoids during pregnancy?

  • Stay hydrated and eat a high fibre diet.
  • Never push when trying to pass a bowel movement.
  • Don’t gain a lot of weight to reduce pressure on the pelvic area.
  • Do not sit or stand for long periods of time.
  • Ice packs may ease the itch and pain of haemorrhoids.
