The ‘Joy of Giving’ is something that can not be replicated by any other emotion. While we do celebrate the first week of October as the Joy of Giving week, I learnt from my parents early on, that the more you give, the more you get. You don’t have to give millions of dollars, even helping out someone who does not have a pencil and paper to take to school or giving away a toy you no longer play with, was good enough.
When we read about the Apollo Cradle Foundation recently, we realised its a wonderful way to give back to the community. The Foundation has a very simple motto. To bring a smile to the faces of children who can not afford to buy toys. They are ready to accept used toys in good condition from us. All we have to do is to drop them at their collection centres.
Last year they did a drive in Bangalore and managed to get 10,000 toys for under privileged kids! That;s a lot of toys! But this year, they are aiming higher. Their aim to reach 50,000 children and bring a smile is each of their faces!’
Not only that, they are also targeting Delhi and Hyderabad. In each city, their plan is to collect the toys from the various collection centres and send it across to children who need them.
With Christmas and New Year just gone by, we definitely will have some extra toys we would not really be using. So it is a wonderful time to share and spread the joy. It is even a wonderful way to teach your kids to share. Ask them to segregate the toys they would not really be playing with too much, or the ones they have grown too old for. Then ask them to check if they think it is in a good condition to share. And ask them to collect them all.
See the nearest collection centre to your house. Go and drop them off at the collection centre! That’s all…its done.
