Asthma in Expecting Mothers

Is pregnancy safe for women having asthma? Will it lead to any complications for the mother and child? Are asthma medications safe to use during pregnancy? These are common questions that doctors are asked by expectant mothers. When controlled and managed well, asthma does not have an adverse impact on the pregnancy, mother or foetus. Though it is true that it could impact the oxygen supply to the foetus, by taking preventing measures and managing it well, the negative risks can be managed. This common health problem can also occur in pregnant women who have never had it before.
What if asthma is uncontrolled during pregnancy?
Uncontrolled asthma can affect your health as well as the foetus. Here are the risks:
Risks to the mother
Hypertension
Preeclampsia leading to headache, belly pain, facial swelling and vision problems
Vaginal bleeding
Complicated labour
Risks to the foetus
Slow growth
Low birth weight
Premature birth
Death immediately after or before birth
Asthma Action Plan
It is very important to have an asthma action plan to manage asthma during pregnancy. Here are some pointers:
Meet your doctor regularly (preferably once every month) to monitor your lung function and symptoms
Take your medications on time and stick to the recommended diet plan
Notice any change in the foetal movement and monitor it daily (especially after 28 weeks)
Recognise the warning signs like coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath etc. and be prepared. You could have a family member be there with you on call
If you have severe asthma, speak to your doctor and check if foetal growth needs to be monitored after an asthma attack
Avoid asthma triggers like dust, smoke, pet fur etc. to reduce dependency on medicines
You need to protect yourself against flu. Flu vaccine is highly recommended for all pregnant women
Treatment And Medication
Most asthma medications can safely been used during pregnancy. It is recommended and better to manage asthma with medication than to not take any medication at all. You can address all your queries about asthma and treatment options to our team of doctors at Apollo Cradle.
